A student from the Jordan Media Institute (JMI) took part in the program of the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change, alongside 80 students from 15 countries. The program is organized annually and aims at disseminating media literacy. This year, it was held under the title "Voices Against Extremism: Media Responses to Global Populism".
Laila Al-Kloub, MA student in journalism and new media, took part in the 21-day program, which seeks to provide the participants with the key principles of sound journalistic coverage of populist rhetoric and extremism and to enhance the skills of journalists in how to handle this rhetoric, which some people use to elicit the sympathy of the public.
The program was supervised by Dr. Paul Mihailidis, an associate professor in the School of Communication at Emerson College in Boston, MA. It included workshops to develop the skills of the participants, sessions to enrich their knowledge, and lectures by well-known figures from many countries, including U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.
The program website is available at https://medium.com/reactionplaybook. The participants posted six different projects on the website. They included videos, pictures, and interactive plays. The aim is to raise the awareness of the public about their political options and how populism affects politics in general.
Laila contributed to the production of an interactive game, Switch ON to the Future, which serves the purposes of the project. She said that her participation was rich and contributed to shaping her future ambitions of serving the truth in the media.

She added that during her participation, she presented two sessions: The first on leadership and youth work in Jordan, and the second on holding debates and oversight of the performance of the parliament and elections and politics. During the second session, she spoke about the life of women in the Arab and Muslim worlds.
This is the fifth year in a row in which JMI students take part in the Academy, which was established in 2007. The JMI is a partner of the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change. It is also a partner of a number of other international academies that are specialized in media.
