Amman -- The Jordan Media Institute (JMI) conducted an interactive training workshop on coverage of children issues, with the participation of 10 journalists from the governorates. The workshop is supported by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and is within the project "Makani" for journalists for "enhancing the quality of reporting on child protection issues in Jordan."

The workshop aims at creating journalism that is specialized in children's rights and enabling journalists to report on the issues of children and their families professionally and in a manner that heeds the ethics of journalistic work.

Journalists from the governorates of Zarqa, Karak, Aqaba, and Amman took part in two previous workshops, which included intensive training on reporting news related to children's rights and issues, as well as professional and ethical standards when handling children or their parents in news coverage and protecting them from harm.

Trainer Saad Hattar said that "the interactive workshop complements the two previous workshops. The participants were assigned features and news stories on children." He added that "ideas were discussed and training material was presented. Also, we examined the extent of progress in features and news stories and made the necessary changes so as to finalize the news stories to be published/broadcast within the context of this project. The aim is also to enable the participants to compete for the prize of the best report on child issues, which is to be announced soon."

The JMI and UNICEF will launch a contest for "the best report on children issues and protecting them from violence for 2018" in order to raise awareness, shed more light on child journalism, and encourage the participants to apply the skills they acquired in the training workshops.

Another workshop will be held on Wednesday and Thursday for other journalists from the governorates of Amman, Zarqa, Ma'an, and Madaba.
