Amman, February 4th 2011,
A group of Journalism students from TU Dortmund University in Germany visited Jordan as part of an exchange program with the Jordan Media Institute. The students’ visit lasted one week (January 29th – February 4th) during which they got acquainted with the media landscape in Jordan, its legal and professional frameworks as well as with the development of new and online media and the relation between media and politics.
The exchange program included 13 German and 10 Jordanian students who attended talks and discussion panels, in addition to visits to official and independent institutions, including: the Jordanian Parliament where they met and talked to a representative from the Public Freedoms Committee; the Jordan Media City; local dailies and online media outlets; the Baqaa’ refugees camp and the Royal Film Commission where they watched a documentary by the Jordanian Director Abdel Salam Al-Hajj.
Commenting on the visit, Stella Christin Peters : “It has been an impressive and festive week. I didn’t know much about Jordan and its media environment. Now, I would like to come back to Amman and work on a project with my fellow Jordanian journalists.” Ayman Al-Hunaiti a JMI Master’s student shared her enthusiasm saying: “The exchange program with Dortmund University enhanced our knowledge of the western media, and introduced us to the German culture. It has been a rare opportunity to exchange ideas, experiences and discussions in different areas.”
A group of students from JMI have already visited TU Dortmund University last September and have worked on reports with their German colleagues pertaining to media policies, new media challenges as well as on issues related to the Arab community in German and the way the media covers them.
This exchange program comes as part of JMI’s effort to enrich its students’ knowledge and exposure to different media experiences and environments and building professional networks and cooperation across borders.
