15 Aug. 2018

Amman- Tala Al-Sharif, a student from the Jordan Media Institute, took part, alongside 75 students from 15 countries, in the program of the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change, which is organized annually in Austria. The program aims at promoting media literacy methods. This year, it was held under the title "Re-Imagining Journalism: News and Storytelling in an Age of Distrust."

The 21-day program seeks to explore key challenges facing global journalism, including fake news and the methods that should be followed to counter hate speech and political polarization.

Al-Sharif said that "the Academy helped enrich knowledge through the challenges facing the media, especially since it brought together students from different countries and universities. The participants gained new knowledge about the needs of new journalism."

Al-Sharif, in collaboration with a group of Academy students, designed a website that helps students learn about "Journalism of Care." She contributed a report that introduced this new concept to readers. The report was posted on the website of the Academy: https://matthombre.wixsite.com/journalismcare
She also discussed with a group of other students the main challenges facing the media in the Arab world, especially in Palestine, and the obstacles facing Palestinian women journalists.

The program contained around 21 training workshops that aimed at developing the knowledge and skills of the participants, presented by professors from international universities under the supervision of Associate Professor Paul Mihailidis from the School of Communication at Emerson College in Boston.

It is worth mentioning that this is the sixth year in a row in which students of the Media Institute take part in the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change, which was founded in 2007. The Jordan Media Institute is considered one of the partners of the Academy, alongside many other international academic media institutions.
